Implementing the Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting & Learning (MERL) tool in Kenya

This project supports the Government of Kenya to develop a participatory Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting and Learning (MERL) tool to improve the tracking of climate investments, outcomes, and impacts. It addresses gaps in existing monitoring systems that limit the measurement of climate action effectiveness, climate finance mobilisation, project sustainability, and reporting. Led by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry (MECCF) with support from CDKN Kenya and pilot counties, the tool is being co-created to strengthen evidence-based climate planning and accountability.

Learning from the ground: How science and local knowledge are reducing climate risks in the coastal city of Saint-Louis, Senegal In the coastal city of Saint-Louis, Senegal, local knowledge and climate science are being brought together to help residents anticipate risks and act before crises strike. This blog, written by Jean-Pascal Correa, Ndèye Mané Fall and Amanda April, explores how a climate-sensitive early warning system, through CDKN Senegal's implementing partner, ENDA Energie, is being developed to strengthen the resilience of local actors, giving them with the tools needed to forecast and prevent climate disasters.

Reflecting as we go: More lessons from designing and delivering CDKN’s knowledge brokering workshops 2025 was a busy year for CDKN in strengthening our knowledge-brokering capacities. Lucia Scodanibbio reflects on the lessons from our first two workshops in 2024 to deliver five more in 2025, shifting our attention to young people. As the year drew to a close, we took stock of these experiences and found many rich lessons emerging.

Struggling to mainstream climate issues? Lessons learnt from CDKN’s knowledge brokering experience A learning resource that synthesises insights from CDKN’s knowledge brokering work across Asia and Africa since 2018. It identifies seven common challenges to mainstreaming climate change into policy and decision-making and illustrates practical, context-specific pathways for overcoming them. The resource draws on partner reflections, interviews, and learning exchanges to support practitioners working at the climate–development interface.

Muungano youth share their role as knowledge brokers driving change in informal settlements Young people are often the first responders to climate and social challenges in their communities, and this is especially true for Muungano wa Wanavijiji Youth. Living in informal settlements where issues of land, housing, and access to basic services are deeply connected to climate vulnerability, Muungano youth are often the hardest hit by disasters like floods.

This was one of the questions we posed to project partners involved in the Step Change initiative, who recently met in Arusha, Tanzania. CDKN facilitated a session using the 'All hands on deck' card game to bring out the most important aspects of their knowledge brokering approaches.
