Belize’s economic growth is inherently linked to expansion of the tourism industry, yet the activities of this industry often result in habitat degradation, undermining the very ecosystems on which it depends. This project will assess the vulnerability of Belize’s tourism system to climate change, including the coastal ecosystems on which it depends, and examine how current policies serve to facilitate or hinder climate-compatible tourism development, based on healthy coastal ecosystems.

This project aims to improve flood models and use information from past extreme rainfall events to create maps which illustrate future flood risk

Very little is known about the potential impacts of climate change on Belize’s water resources, despite this being identified as a priority area of research for the country. This project will use modeling to assess the potential impacts of climate change on the supply and demand for water and water quality in Belize across different climate change and land use scenarios and in so doing, will determine the hydrographic areas most vulnerable to climate change.

In many Caribbean countries, national and sectoral level policies are lagging behind the already evident threats to development from climate change despite the strong efforts made at the international and community level to adapt. The Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI), in collaboration with the World Resource Institute (WRI) and the St. Lucia National Trust (SLNT) is implementing a project in St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago to increase civil society engagement in policy and institutional analysis for climate change adaptation.

ACCRA is implementing national level advocacy and capacity building strategies in Ethiopia, Uganda and Mozambique.

This project aims to foster climate compatible development in African cities through working with informality and building climate resilience amongst the urban poor.

Ecosystem-based adaptation is listed in the Durban Adaptation Charter as a priority action for local and sub-national governments. This project brings together urban practitioners, policy makers and the scientific community/leading thinkers to draft a “framework” for smart decision-making criteria around Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) and ecosystems management for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

Provision of shelter following disasters is one of the largest recurrent cost for governments and relief organizations, and the failure of shelters to protect people from hazards is a significant risk. Improving shelter design is therefore central to reducing hydro-meteorological disaster risk and supports adaptation to climate change.

CDKN is working on a range of initiatives to share learning from our programme to date. One of these is an initiative to capture and synthesise lessons learned from our work at the sub-national level in developing countries.

Over the last decade a new term has entered the lexicon of policy makers and the media: climate change refugees or climate change induced forced displacement. The First Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR1) in 1990 noted that the greatest single impact of climate change might be on human displacement and migration.

The project aims to develop an Action Plan for Cartagena de Indias to adapt to climate change. This includes an analysis of vulnerabilities and guidelines for adaptation for island territories, with the goal of strengthening competitiveness and sectorial development in the city and in the surrounding islands.
