Youth in Climate Action Small Grants Initiative in Ethiopia

CDKN Ethiopia supports gender-equitable and socially inclusive climate-resilient action by strengthening the capacities and leadership of government and youth partners. From 2023, youth groups participated in Ethiopia's Gender Equality and Social Inclusion and Climate Change Community of Practice. A youth-led assessment subsequently mapped climate and environmental initiatives in Addis Ababa and identified limited access to finance, organisational capacity and networking opportunities as major barriers to youth-led action.

It highlights EbA efforts to strengthen climate resilience, improve natural resource management and support sustainable livelihood opportunities through community participation, partnership and locally driven action.

It provides guidance to GESI experts (and facilitators) on how to plan, prepare for, and conduct training on GESI integration in the design and implementation of development and climate change projects.

The concept of a just transition is not new and has been around since the 1980s when it was used by Trade Unions to draw attention to the social effects of environmental measures (United Nations, 2023). In the context of climate change, it aims to ensure that no one is left behind, or excluded, in the transition to environmentally sustainable and low-carbon economies.
