Mainstreaming climate compatible development: Insights from CDKN's first seven years
CDKN's flagship book, Mainstreaming Climate Compatible Development, draws from the alliance’s seven year experience of supporting climate compatible development in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.
The book provides practical recommendations on how to achieve low-carbon, climate-resilient development in low income and emerging economies. The new volume – in both pdf and digibook form – is intended to help countries achieve the goals of the Paris climate agreement smarter and faster. It is based on CDKN and its partners’ extensive technical assistance to developing country governments, targeted research, knowledge management and engagement.
The authors share CDKN’s pragmatic lessons on:
- making the political case for climate action by aligning it with fundamental development priorities and getting key interest groups on board;
- planning at both sectoral and cross-economy level;
- mobilising financial, human and institutional systems and resources to deliver climate compatible development;
- scaling up ambition – and in particular, scaling from successful pilot initiatives to more impactful, broader-reaching programmes; and
- leveraging the ambition and momentum of progressive governments and non-state actors to build and sustain global, collective action.
The book comes at a timely moment, as governments consider the acute need for ambitious climate action in the run-up to 2020, followed by delivery of their national commitments (NDCs). CDKN’s reflections provide a unique contribution to this debate for policy advisors, development practitioners, non-governmental groups and aid donors alike.
