Project : Building climate change awareness in the South Asian media

Project : ESMAP: Africa Clean Cooking Energy Solutions

The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) estimates that by 2030 one billion people in sub-Saharan Africa will depend on biomass as their main energy source. Currently over 80% of people in sub-Saharann Africa depend on solid fuels such as charcoal and firewood– more than any other region in the world. CDKN is supporting the African Clean Cooking Initiative (ACCI), which is designed to support a market-driven approach to increase the use of clean cook stoves in Africa through addressing key market barriers.

Project : Acting together for bold outcomes – support for upcoming meeting of like-minded countries in Mexico

This project supported a meeting in Mexico of like-minded countries who are working for an ambitious climate change deal. The support provided by CDKN was for the workshop itself and related documents, which acted as a springboard for further work to build an alliance of ambition that cuts across Latin American and African countries, small islands states and least developed countries.

Support to the Republic of Nauru as Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States

This project aimed to provide support to the Republic of Nauru, as Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), in the form of funding for the key positions of the Deputy UNFCCC Negotiator for Alliance of Small Island States and the Legal Adviser (Climate Change) to the Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States.

Project : Facilitation of legal advice to UNFCCC developing country negotiators

This project aims to provide legal support to Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) serving LDCs during the UNFCCC process. It also aims to build the capacity and understanding of LDC decision makers on the legal aspects of the negotiations, including through the provision of training workshops and briefing notes.

In considering mitigation actions, policy makers not only need to consider the costs and benefits of embarking on a low carbon development path, they also need to consider the socio-economic implications of any action. CDKN is supporting a research project which will develop cutting edge methodologies to link sectoral and economy wide models in order to address issues critical to the development of climate-compatible policy.

Project : Climate-proofing the medium term plan in The Gambia

With support from CDKN, The Gambia revised its medium term plan - the Programme for Accelerated Growth and Employment (PAGE) - to integrate climate change into policies and actions. This was the first step towards developing a climate change strategy for the country.
