Supporting NDC implementation in Ethiopia
Supporting NDC implementation in Ethiopia
CDKN has been working to support NDC implementation in Ethiopia through the Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP). CAEP was designed by the NDC Partnership to support developing countries in updating and implementing their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Context
The Government of Ethiopia is invested in implementing its climate change goals. After setting an ambitious Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in 2015, the country is currently finalising its NDC update process. In 2020, in response to the demand from the Ethiopian government and its identified priority areas of support in terms of the NDC update and implementation, SouthSouthNorth was identified as a partner to lead on the implementation of a number of these priorities. This took the form of technical assistance to the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Commission (EFCCC), which is the authority of the Government of Ethiopia that is responsible for the implementing climate action. These areas (workstreams) were:
- Knowledge management, dissemination of knowledge and information exchange on the NDC implementation actions that were taken by the country, and
- Development of strategies on aspects and sectors that were relevant to the NDC update process of Ethiopia.
Separately funded by the World Bank and NDC Partnership, SSN was also part of the consortium that prepared the detailed technical report that served as the basis for Ethiopia’s Updated NDC (submitted in 2021).
Project objective
The objective of the project was to support the NDC implementation and update process of the Government of Ethiopia, by providing in-country technical assistance and capacity building support in priority areas of support that were identified by the government.
Project activities and outputs
As part of this engagement, CDKN co-financed and jointly implemented the CAEP workstream on knowledge management and information exchange on the NDC implementation processes. This mainly involved the preparation of the NDC highlights newsletter, which is a government owned newsletter which tracks Ethiopia’s NDC/CRGE implementation. Despite the finalisation of this knowledge management workstream of CAEP in March 2021, CDKN continues to fund the preparation of the NDC highlights newsletter until September 2021. Read the NDC highlights newsletters below:
