OUTLOOK: Peru Special Edition
The latest edition of CDKN’s Climate and Development Outlook shines the spotlight on Peru, which holds the Presidency of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP) until it hands over to France in December 2015. Peru is one of the 13 countries where CDKN has an established programme to support climate compatible development.
The Government of Peru aims to be a regional and global leader on tackling climate change and show by example how countries can harness climate action to economic growth and poverty reduction. CDKN has been supporting PlanCC, a technical, multi-stakeholder process to map different options for Peru’s low-carbon development. PlanCC is informing Peru’s national political leaders, who will table the country’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) at the global talks this year.
The newsletter includes:
- A column by Maria Paz Cigaran, Chief Executive of Libelula, which leads the technical inputs into Peru’s national policies for tackling climate change. Ms Cigaran talks about the potential for Peru’s forest and land use sectors to reduce their net greenhouse gas emissions to zero. She outlines the rural development programmes in the Andes that are already strengthening communities’ climate resilience while tackling poverty.
- A column by Carolina Proano, CDKN’s Project Manager in Peru. Ms Proano sets out CDKN’s programme in Peru, which aims to connect climate science with policy, and to support mobilisation of finance for climate compatible development.
- The latest news from CDKN’s Business Partnerships Programme, which is supporting the Carbon Trust (a UK-based not-for-profit group) to advance energy efficiency with Peru’s private sector.
- Highlights of a CDKN-supported project to assess the carbon and water footprints of the municipalities of three Andean cities, including Lima, Peru, together with their larger urban territories, and to make recommendations for carbon and water savings.
