As part of New York Climate Week 2024, the GLOW programme will be hosting an event on women’s economic empowerment for unlocking just transitions. Join us in-person or online on Monday 23rd September at 11-12.30 EDT. Register here.

Women’s economic empowerment is a question of rights. It is also a key to unlocking progress on climate change mitigation and adaptation. Just transitions to net-zero, climate-resilient futures will not be possible without bridging the gender development gap and making intentional investments in empowering women at the same time.

This NYCW event showcases new evidence from the Gender Equality in a Low Carbon World (GLOW) programme in Central America, East Africa, South Asia and internationally. Focusing on sustainable agriculture, forestry, aquaculture and circular economies, we will look at how to break down barriers and support the capabilities of diverse women to improve their lives and contribute to sustainable, inclusive economies.

Speakers will share how gender-inclusive strategies not only drive environmental sustainability but also uplift communities by improving livelihoods, ensuring equitable access to resources, and promoting social justice.

We welcome you to get actively involved in sharing your experiences. By providing ample time for discussion and networking, we seek to use this space to catalyse new thinking and partnerships.

Speakers:

  • Rahul Karki, Head of ForestAction Nepal
  • Karnika Yadav, Director, Intellecap East Africa
  • Margarita Beneke de Sanfeliu, Research Director, FUSADES El Salvador
  • Joel Onyango, Study Lead, ACTS Kenya
  • Mairi Dupar, Technical Lead, Gender Equality in a Low Carbon World (GLOW)
  • Erin Tansey, Director, Sustainable Inclusive Economies, IDRC-Canada
