In Quito, Ecuador from 17-20 October 2016, UN Habitat convened its first global gathering in 20 years. Governments agreed the New Urban Agenda, which aims to set a roadmap for sustainable and safe cities. You can read about the conference and Agenda at: www.habitat3.org

CDKN at Habitat 3: Calling for climate action in city development

A CDKN delegation exhibited and presented our work on 'mainstreaming climate compatible development' in cities throughout the Habitat 3 conference. We shared our publications on the challenges and successful strategies for progressing climate compatible development in cities including the latest of our 'Inside Stories' and 'Close to home: Subnational strategies for climate compatible development.' During the week, we also launched two briefing notes that distil lessons learned from CDKN's local and city-level experience in achieving climate compatible development:

Ari Huhtala, CDKN Deputy CEO, called for Habitat 3 participants to mainstream climate action into city development:

Tesfaye Hailu of CDKN Ethiopia described how the Government of Ethiopia has set sustainable urban development in its sights and is trying to raise international funds for this task:

 

Lisa Junghans of Germanwatch outlined some innovative and untapped sources of funds that cities can use to support their climate compatible development initiatives - in the findings from a CDKN research project:
