The fourth annual Gobeshona Global Conference focussed on monitoring locally-led adaptation (LLA) and resilience was held virtually from 1-8 March 2024. This year, the conference aimed to link local and international researchers, scholars, policy-makers and practitioners to support and leverage the intentions and creativity of local communities. The conference also aimed to address the quality of research so that publishing research can become a more effective response to climate impacts and LLA.

Locally-led adaptation and the Global Goal on Adaptation: How to get the fit right?

Date: Friday 8 March 2024
Time: 15:00 (SAST)
Organising partners: International Development Research Centre (IDRC), African Research and Impact Network (ARIN), CDKN, University of Cape Town (UCT)

This session considered what we know about how to reconcile global goals and local ambitions for equitable and inclusive action. Lessons from Africa and Latin America were shared about approaches to measuring the effectiveness and outcomes of LLA and how to inform the critically important two years ahead for the Global Goal on Adaptation. The session began with three critical case studies of efforts that are already measuring the effectiveness and outcomes of LLA. This was followed by a panel discussion between leaders in the field who have been involved in the process of developing the Global Goal on Adaptation. They reflected on the challenges and opportunities that they saw in the years ahead, leaving attendees with a contextualised understanding of these challenges and some insights into the opportunities ahead and why they mattered.
