Small grant opportunity for community-minded young Africans concerned about climate injustice
CDKN, the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) and the Youth in Landscapes Initiative (YIL) have launched a small grant call inviting young people in Africa to implement an activity or process that facilitates climate justice in their communities, landscapes or seascapes.
Those most impacted by and who are adapting to climate changes on a daily basis, should have access to resources and appropriate spaces to inform and implement action that achieves climate justice. Their experiences, aspirations, hopes and ideas need to be heard and acted upon. We believe that through the use of citizen media tools, art, movement building and networking opportunities, these voices can be heard, empowered and amplified to impact change at local, national and global levels.
Call focus
CDKN, in partnership with the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) and the Youth in Landscapes Initiative (YIL), is launching a small grant call for underrepresented young people in Africa to implement an activity or process in their communities, landscapes or seascapes that envisions or advances climate justice. Successful grantees will be sponsored to attend the Landscape Leadership Workshop held in Nairobi (9-10 October) ahead of GLF Nairobi 2023 (11-12 October). Here they will meet and form part of a cohort of young people that will over a six-month period learn from each other, exchange ideas and have access to various mentoring, engagement and training opportunities to support the inclusion of their voices, views and ideas into global conversations and understanding of climate justice.
How to apply
To apply for the grant, please visit the Landscape Leadership Workshop webpage and complete the workshop application form before 10 August. Here you will be asked:
- What activity/ies would the grant enable you to implement in your community, landscape or seascape that furthers climate justice?
- Why do you feel/think your project should be selected for this grant?
- What new skills or knowledge do you hope to build through participating in the different activities related to the grant, and how could you share these within your community, landscape or seascape?
You will furthermore be required to submit a budget breakdown to a maximum of $2,000.
Successful applicants will be notified by early September. We encourage entries to:
- Propose a range of creative, innovative or practical activities to advance their vision or the implementation of climate justice in their communities, landscapes or seascapes. This could include participatory climate vulnerability mapping, training on climate literacy and the use of diverse forms of knowledge and communications, including through art installations, slam poetry, song, storytelling, theatre and more.
- Use free and widely available citizen media tools and social media platforms. These could include blogs, microblogs like Twitter, free software like Audacity for editing audio, SoundCloud, Audioboo, or Radioteca. Video sites like YouTube and Vimeo, or mapping with OpenStreetMaps. You might also consider using social networking sites like Facebook to distribute your content.
- Be completely free of technology and instead engage with your community and lived environment through interactive activities, artwork, an event, etc.
- Be creative and ambitious, yet realistic in your proposals.
