POLICY BRIEF: Land Use, Food Security and Climate Change in Vietnam
POLICY BRIEF: Land Use, Food Security and Climate Change in Vietnam
This policy brief, Land Use, Food Security and Climate Change in Vietnam, is part of the project A global-to-local modelling approach to land use dynamics in Vietnam: Potential effects of a high climate impact and a high economic growth scenario, which aims to provide better insights about future land use change in Vietnam and how this relates to climate change and food security in Vietnam. The main research questions are: 1) What is the impact of socio‐economic development on land use and land use change for the period 2010‐2030 under alternative futures, including climate change? 2) What is the spatial pattern of land use change in Vietnam? 3) What are the implications for food security and greenhouse gas emissions?
Socio-economic development, land use, climate change and food security are all interconnected at different scales. Decision makers in Vietnam need to be aware about the complex and uncertain relationships between global and local drivers of socio‐economic change, and take a forward look when formulating food security and climate change mitigation and adaptation policies. This study uses a novel global-to‐local approach that combines an economic (Computable General Equilibrium or CGE) model with a spatially explicit land use model to capture change at the global, national and landscape level for the period 2010 ‐ 2030 under three scenarios. The key findings of this policy brief are presented in terms of:
- Land Use Change
- Food Security
- Flooding
- Climate Change and Biodiversity
- Policy Trade-Offs
