CONTEXT

Africa remains one of the region's most vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change despite contributing the least to global greenhouse gas emissions. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, floods, droughts, coastal erosion, and ecosystem degradation continue to threaten livelihoods, food systems, water security, and development across the continent. In Ghana, these impacts are increasingly visible through climate-induced displacement, agricultural instability, urban flooding, and deepening vulnerability among already marginalised communities. 

Young people across Africa are emerging as powerful drivers of climate innovation, advocacy, and community mobilisation, yet many still face barriers such as limited access to technical knowledge, mentorship, financial literacy, institutional support, and practical pathways to scale their impact. The Climate Activist Programme (CAP) was launched in 2024 to close these gaps, and its current edition, CAP 3.0: Skills to Scale for Resilience, builds on the lessons of CAP24 and CAP25 with a multidisciplinary, experiential approach spanning climate science, policy, leadership, project management, climate finance, entrepreneurship, storytelling, and creative advocacy. 

 

PROJECT OBJECTIVES 

The overall goal of the programme is to empower a new generation of technically skilled, innovative, and collaborative climate leaders equipped to design, implement, and scale impactful climate initiatives across Ghana and Africa. Specific objectives are to: 

  • Strengthen participants' understanding of climate science, policy, adaptation, mitigation, and climate justice, within global and Ghanaian frameworks. 

  • Promote youth leadership and community-based climate action through mentorship, peer learning, and project incubation. 

  • Advance entrepreneurship and employability pathways, enabling green livelihoods and sustainable climate-related ventures. 

  • Embed Gender Equity, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) across recruitment, facilitation, mentorship, and project implementation. 

 

PROJECT ACTIVITIES 

  • Intensive bootcamp: immersive in-person training on climate science, policy, project management, leadership, climate finance, advocacy, entrepreneurship, and storytelling. 
  • Masterclass tracks: specialised, thematic sessions in Community Voices, Ecopreneurship & Green Business Innovation, Arts & Food, and Content Creation. 
  • Innovation labs and project development: fellows work in teams to design climate solutions and project prototypes tailored to local community challenges. 
  • Creative advocacy and storytelling sessions: digital storytelling, visual arts, media engagement, podcasts, and food systems as tools for climate communication. 
  • Excursions and community engagement: site visits and experiential, field-based learning activities. 
  • Post-programme mentorship: a year-long structured framework of one-on-one mentorship, peer learning circles, skill clinics, and networking opportunities. 
  • Presentation day and graduation: project presentations, panel review, awards ceremony, and certification of fellows.
