For cities to be sustainable, they need to simultaneously mitigate their greenhouse gas emissions and ensure adequate access to basic urban services such as water, food and energy to their growing populations. A new report from CDKN and RUAF Foundation looks at the cases of Sri Lanka and Argentina where urban adaptation plans have achieved numerous benefits.

What’s next in climate change? INDCs!
We’re going to hear a lot more in coming months about INDCs, Intended Nationally Determined Contributions, says CDKN's Executive Chairman Simon Maxwell. INDCs are the country pledges that will form the basis of negotiation in the run-up to the UNFCCC's twenty-first Conference of the Parties (COP21) in Paris in 2015.
The international community has long agreed on the importance of making gender issues a core consideration in international and domestic policy processes. However, in practice, the gender dimension of development, adaptation and mitigation projects has often been ignored or overlooked. When development and climate-related projects do give attention to gender, the discourse tends to focus on two predominant themes.
Peru’s high rate of economic growth has led to a substantial increase in total energy consumption, which is expected to continue to rise in the future. In the short term, this could lead to potential deficits in electricity supply as generation capacity struggles to keep pace with demand. This poses a danger to economic growth and business competitiveness if shortages lead to operational disruptions or additional costs to guarantee energy supply.
