CDKN / MAPS UNFCCC Side Event: Thursday 8 Dec 2011, 20h15, DEC, Levubu River
Developing countries collaborate on climate compatible development – a new way of ‘doing aid’?
8 Dec 2011, Durban ~ What happens when the world mobilises its best expertise and information to address a global problem…at a local or regional level?
Find out more from the people who’ve collaborated on ‘climate-compatible development’… and thrived to tell the tale!
Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) and Mitigation Action Plans Scenarios (MAPS) invite you to an interactive event that will showcase real and concrete examples of collaboration in practice – between governments, donors, private sector and NGOs – and highlight the latest research on the topic.
Governments want to know what has been tried in other places. They also need localised evidence to inform the design and implementation of climate-compatible development strategies. And they need to forge relationships across sectors, which is more challenging than it sounds. CDKN’s role is to channel the best available expertise and research to developing country decision-makers; support dialogue across sectors and support bespoke research where information is missing.
Here are just a few examples of how this works in practice:
- In the Caribbean, government leads from the fifteen CARICOM island states worked together with local experts, NGOs, and civil society to pool their collective knowledge and determine priority actions for climate resilient development. This participatory process – which had the support of international expertise – has led to the regional Implementation Plan: Delivering Transformation Change 2011-2021 . The Implementation Plan is now THE framework for investment and action in the Caribbean at both regional and national level.
- Peru is one of the key emerging economies in Latin America. The government has chosen a low-carbon, climate-resilient development path: the National Climate Change plan. What will this mean for the government’s pledges for growth and employment? Who should have a voice? How can best science and local knowledge transform the way that difficult political decisions will be taken in Peru? This is exactly the process that the Peruvian government, MAPS and CDKN are collaborating on, by adapting the highly successful South African Long Term Mitigation Scenarios process.
- CDKN is working with African scientists to downscale climate models, providing sub-regional information about projected climate impacts. This more country-relevant information – although it still reflects the uncertainty of climate models – will help decision-makers plan better and build resilience.
Come and hear people who have been part of these and other climate compatible development processes:
