On 12 December 2015, the world agreed to a landmark new global agreement on climate change. The historic Paris Agreement marks a turning point for humanity’s response to one of this Century’s greatest challenges, and will provide the framework for action to reduce emissions and increase climate resilience for many years to come.
Following immediately after Ban Ki-moon’s high-level signing ceremony for the Paris Agreement at UNHQ in New York, join us a little further downtown at New York’s Civic Hall for cocktails and an intimate conversation with three of the most important players in the Paris negotiations.
Facilitated by Independent Diplomat’s Dr Dean Bialek, the event will explore some of the critical behind-the-scenes moments and political compromises that helped to shape the final Paris Agreement, and tackle some of the key challenges the world faces in trying to implement it.
The discussion will also reveal the background to Tony de Brum’s creation of the “High Ambition Coalition”, which The New Yorker called “an unprecedented diplomatic feat” given the critical role it played in building the necessary political momentum for some of the most ambitious elements in the Paris Agreement. These include a new goal to limit global warming to 1.5° Celsius, the legal requirement for all countries to update their emissions reduction targets every five years, and a vision for the world to get to ‘net zero’ emissions by the second half of the Century.
Make sure to register for tickets to guarantee your seat at the event.
