Future Climate for Africa

Future Climate for Africa (FCFA) is a new five-year programme to advance scientific knowledge, understanding and prediction of African climate variability and change for the next 5-40 years. It supports better integration of science into decision-making. CDKN is running FCFA’s Learn about the research initiatives and demonstration projects involved, and how you can get involved.

Climate resilience activities at subnational level in South Asian countries

You can hear CDKN’s Ali Tauqeer Sheikh at this official side event where he, along with other practitioners, will discuss how impacts predicted by the IPCC for South Asia are already visible. This side event will share the lessons learned from implementing a climate agenda at various levels of governance, through regional cooperation across countries and stakeholder groups.

Uganda: The potential of investing in adaptation

Climate change will have wide-ranging impacts across the Ugandan economy, as revealed by recent research commissioned by CDKN for the Government of Uganda. Water, infrastructure, energy and agriculture are among the key sectors that will be affected. This discussion will interrogate the study’s conclusions: that it makes economic sense to invest in climate change adaptation today.

Civil society and government dialogues to establish national climate agendas in Latin America

In five countries, the Latin American Platform on Climate Change’s members brought together multi-sectoral platforms that contributed civil society perspectives to the national climate agenda of these countries. The Latin American Platform is coordinated by Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano (FFLA), a CDKN Alliance member.

Development and Climate Days: Zero poverty, zero emissions – Tough talk on poverty and climate  

This event aims to convene international policymakers, scientists and development practitioners around the goal of bringing zero net emissions and poverty within reach.  The innovative, widely-anticipated event will provide attendees with the space to engage in tough dialogue with peers, as well as to participate in many networking and participatory learning opportunities.   We’re very sorry but due to over-subscription, we have had to close registration for this event to meet health and safety requirements. If you are already registered, then please remember you must bring photo ID to the event, in order to enter.

Land use in Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs)

Sam Bickersteth will present analysis of INDCs and how they include agriculture, food security and land use as well as discussing links to the Sustainable Development Goals. He will ask the question of whether we need provision for food security under a new climate regime, or If that is a gap in the INDCs.

Strategic climate change partnerships: Opportunities and actions in developing countries

Sam Bickersteth will speak at this CDKN-organised side event highlighting the role of strategic partnerships in taking action on climate change. Participants will discuss low-emissions development, climate- smart agriculture, renewable energy, and monitoring, reporting and verification systems for land-based activities, as well as the role for climate legislation.

Promoting pro-poor low carbon development pathways with a gender focus

Ari Huhtala of CDKN will speak at this debate, which focuses on learning how low carbon development strategies can be promoted nationally and regionally, and how they can contribute to stronger implementation of the Paris agreements and increasing ambitions of the INDCs. The event will also highlight the need to ensure that climate mitigation is pro-poor and gender-sensitive.

Leadership in climate resilience: real world adaptation measures that save lives

From super storms, droughts, heatwaves, and flooding, communities across the world are increasingly experiencing the impacts of climate change and are working toward preparedness. This debate, including Sam Bickersteth, will focus on direct action toward strengthening climate resilience:

  • Early Warning Systems, disaster risk management and extreme heat
  • Urban climate resilience, green infrastructure and urban heat island effect
  • The gender dimensions of climate change and climate resilience

Harnessing investment for low emission development and INDCs

Achieving the ambitious goals countries have established in their low emission development strategies (LEDS) and intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) requires mobilisation of high levels of private and public investment. This event will highlight approaches and lessons learned from countries in securing public and private funds to scale up action on low emission development. This is an event of the LEDS Global Partnership, for which CDKN and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) act as the joint secretariat.
