Transformative GESI approaches
Transformative GESI approaches
Transformative pathways to gender equity and social inclusion
Transformative approaches to gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) move beyond participation and benefit-sharing to tackle the social norms, power imbalances, and structural barriers that drive inequality. By strengthening the agency, voice, and access to resources of marginalised groups, these approaches help create more equitable and resilient responses to climate change. Although transformative change is often gradual, non-linear, and difficult to measure, it can generate the most meaningful and lasting outcomes for people and communities
The five inside stories featured here explore transformation in diverse contexts across Africa and India. From strengthening women's voice and leadership in decision-making, to expanding economic opportunities, reshaping household dynamics, and elevating traditionally marginalised knowledge and perspectives, these stories illustrate different pathways through which adaptation efforts can contribute to more equitable and resilient societies.
The changes described are not always easily captured through conventional indicators or short project timeframes. Yet they highlight the importance of documenting qualitative shifts in relationships, agency, confidence, social norms, and collective action. Together, these inside stories offer practical insights into what transformative GESI approaches can look like in practice, the conditions that enable them, and why understanding these processes is essential for achieving lasting and equitable climate resilience.
