This project aimed to ensure that the Republic of the Marshall Islands are provided with the legal and technical support to enable them to adequately and constructively take part in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process and the Cartagena dialogue.

The key outputs include:

1. Legal and technical support, as and when requested, provided to the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Alliance of Small Island States(AOSIS) group
2. Assistance in reinforcing the Republic of the Marshall Islands’ leading role within AOSIS through technical and coordination support in the lead up to the Bonn intersessionals, and the 20th and 21st Conferences of the Parties (COP20 and COP21) in Lima, Peru and Paris, France, respectively
3. On-going preparation of briefings and negotiating materials and participation for international negotiations and relevant meetings, such as the UN Secretary General’s Leaders’ Summit on Climate Change
4. Support to the Republic of the Marshall Islands and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) engagement in the Cartagena Dialogue meetings, including preparing briefing notes, legal and technical support and the organisation, facilitation and delivery of strategic meetings for Cartagena Dialogue countries
5. Bolstering the effectiveness of the Cartagena Dialogue and carryover of progressive Dialogue messaging into the UNFCCC negotiations
6. Supporting the Republic of the Marshall Islands' 2013 PIF Chairmanship: Promoting the Majuro Declaration for Climate Leadership, mainstreaming climate change and its impacts on prospects for sustainable development as a key issue
7. Building capacity of technical staff within the Republic of the Marshall Islands
8. Sharing and building on climate diplomacy lessons learnt in the Republic of the Marshall Islands

The key outcomes were (1) an increase in the ability and capacity of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and AOSIS group to participate effectively in the UNFCCC process, the Cartagena Dialogue and other climate change related fora as well as (2) deeper and more substantial diplomatic linkages between Republic of the Marshall Islands and other key actors in the negotiations.
