The purpose of the Africa Climate Change Resilience Alliance (ACCRA) was to increase the use of evidence by governments, development and humanitarian actors in developing and implementing policies and interventions that improve poor people's adaptive capacity, with a specific focus on climate related hazards, change and variability.

The overall objectives of this project were to implement national level advocacy and capacity building strategies in Ethiopia, Uganda and Mozambique, and develop the evidence base around interventions that contribute to climate resilient development.

Through this project, ACCRA has:

  • Organised and host participatory workshops in each country with national civil society organisations to develop a national advocacy strategy for adaptation
  • Developed a capacity building strategy for each country
  • Identified demand driven needs and evidence of capacity gaps and matched these with international and national service providers.
  • Designed (with the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre) an experiential learning game to influence officials in understanding the importance of climate change, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and food security and planning for uncertainty
  • Trained facilitators in the game methodology, concepts and action planning
  • Implemented the communications and learning strategy through blogs, case studies, short films, photos and capacity events.
  • Linked with existing learning platforms and online networks to set up systems for sharing communications

This project built directly on ACCRA Phase 1 where an extensive research process and capacity building ACCRA successfully influenced relevant national policies and plans in Ethiopia, Mozambique and Uganda. In addition, ACCRA played a critical role in bringing together key government institutions responsible for DRR and climate change. An external evaluation found there had been significant increases in the capacity of government stakeholders to understand and address climate-related challenges.
