World disasters report 2012
The World Disasters Report 2012 aims to widen and sharpen the focus on the complex causes of forced migration and the diverse consequences and impacts for both affected populations and humanitarian actors. The report shows that, more than ever, the complex nature of disasters and conflicts is accompanied by the enormous potential to uproot large numbers of people. Other factors, such as population growth, rapid urbanisation, increasing poverty and inequality, hazardous and environmentally contaminated sites, climate change and new technological hazards all combine to accentuate vulnerability and increase the propensity for forced displacement to occur. The report draws attention to the diverse health needs of forced migrants and highlights how forced migration has urbanised. It calls for the mainstreaming of tools and strategies used for identifying vulnerability, promoting resilience and adaptation, and securing better access to protection for people susceptible to displacement.
