OPPORTUNITY: CDKN Invitation to Tender – Enhancing climate change awareness and understanding amongst journalists in south Asia
CDKN PROJECT REFERENCE: KMAS-0003
South Asia is among the highly vulnerable regions to climate change due to its heavy reliance on forestry and agriculture. According to IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report, South Asia could suffer severe consequences of climate change affecting key economic, human and security areas. The costs of ignoring and/or delaying actions against climate change could be substantial. So far public concern in this region is not especially strong and the response of policymakers to address climate compatible development issues has not been hugely enthusiastic.
News media in South Asia has been flourishing over the last two decades. Newspapers have always been an important policy engagement tool and television, has made an unprecedented growth in the region in the last two decades. Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Nepal today have hundreds of local and foreign channels available to majority of viewers. Climate Change, as an issue, rarely makes it to newspapers and news headlines and is mostly considered not newsworthy. Very few newspapers have established climate change beats, while journalists in general may lack the interest, knowledge and skills to cover climate change.
Mushrooming of media outlets in South Asia presents opportunities for raising awareness and improving knowledge on climate compatible development agenda amongst the general public. It also offers prospects to influence the behaviour and attitudes of policy makers towards the climate compatible development agenda.
CDKN is looking for a supplier or consortium of suppliers to propose innovative ideas and interventions to enhance media capacity and coverage of climate change in print and electronic media in India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. The project should target senior and mid-level journalists and should support the use of the media to change the behaviour and attitudes of policy makers in the region to climate change.
