Strengthening resilience through climate-related disaster risk management

Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of weather hazards in certain regions, including heat waves, droughts and intense rainfall, leaving some people and their assets more exposed and vulnerable than others. Work is urgently needed to make countries more resilient to climate related disasters and to scale up short- and long-term disaster risk management strategies.

We are committed to strengthening the availability and use of scientific information on disaster risks. We also promote collaboration among the many government, civil society and private sector organisations working on development, climate and disaster risk management at national and sub-national levels.

In support of this vision, CDKN:

1. Makes scientific information on disaster risk more easily accessible to a wide range of decision-makers in developing countries

2. Seeks to understand and shape how national systems for managing disaster risks are adapted to the impact of climate change through research and technical assistance

3. Will encourage more coherent climate related disaster risk governance across line ministries, civil society and private sector bodies in selected developing countries though our work on technical assistance and partnerships.

Ecosystems-based approaches to building resilience in urban areas: Making the case for a framework for smart decision-making criteria

Ecosystem-based adaptation is listed in the Durban Adaptation Charter as a priority action for local and sub-national governments. This project brings together urban practitioners, policy makers and the scientific community/leading thinkers to draft a “framework” for smart decision-making criteria around Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) and ecosystems management for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

FEATURE: If we know it works, why not do it?

Katie Harris from the Overseas Development Institute asks why such a small percentage of funding given to those in developing countries is spent on disaster preparedness, especially when the sums needed for emergency response following natural disasters have been climbing.
