Transport and environment in sub-Saharan Africa

Transport policies in sub-Saharan Africa are of critical importance to the delivery of sustainable cities, healthy citizens, poverty eradication and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).This report provides an introduction to the transport and environment issues in sub-Saharan Africa focusing on the key transport-related areas of air pollution, road safety, traffic flow management, equity and climate change. Recommendations regarding the development of sustainable transport policies include: maximise transport accessibility for everyone, so that all citizens can access health care, education, training and jobs with minimal effort, costs and journey time; create a safe, secure urban environment; ensure that public health measures deal with the consequences of air pollution; stimulate economic activity and job creation which avoids the generation of new traffic; and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
