PROJECT: CDKN Private Sector Learning Event in India

Project Reference: TAGL-0015

This project aims to investigate what is required to scale up and replicate two of the pilot projects in the Business Partnerships Programme. The Business Partnerships Programme seeks to encourage and facilitate business-to-business partnerships that increase the knowledge, skills and networks needed for goods and services that deliver climate compatible development benefits. The Business Partnerships Programme is currently supporting four projects with private sector service providers, and this learning project focuses on AAGL-0047b (Testing Synergies in Distributed Renewable Village Power in Africa) and AAGL-0047d (Franchising Approaches to provide increased energy access in rural India). Please find more information here.

The objectives of the learning event are:

  • Business Partnerships Programme suppliers to have improved understanding of what it takes to scale up and/or replicate the pilot business models.
  • Increased understanding for a wide audience of the challenges and opportunities for businesses to deliver climate compatible development benefits.
  • A clearer understanding of where CDKN should focus its private sector engagement in the future.
  • Increased understanding of how small businesses can access the necessary funding to scale up/replicate innovative business models.

The project will result in the following outputs:

  • A 3 day learning event of workshops and sessions on ‘rural renewable electrification’ in Delhi, October 2015. The event will bring together suppliers from the Business Partnerships Programme – notably the India and Africa power projects - to learn from each other and share the lessons with a wider audience. The event will be attended by suppliers, partner donors, private sector participants, government partners and CDKN representatives.
  • An industry roundtable on ‘Scaling up private sector financing in Energy Access space: Role of risk guarantees’, resulting in a policy brief containing recommendations to the Indian government on how to support the development of decentralised renewable electrification.
  • A blog post following the Delhi event based on the knowledge shared about new business models for delivering decentralised renewable energy in Uganda and India. Read the blog here.
