CDKN has teamed up with project partners and ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability to present a webinar to share lessons learned from the implementation of Ahmedabad's Heat Action Plan. The webinar will take place on 3 February. In the same series, a previous webinar looked at the planning experiences of building the resilience of cities in Ghana and Mozambique on 23 January.

Building resilience to heat-related health risks: The example of Ahmedabad, India

3 February 2015, 16:00 -17:00 Central Europe Time (GMT+1)

This webinar focusses on heatwaves and their effect on public health, by introducing the pioneering strategy of Ahmedabad to build resilience against such risks. Ahmedabad successfully implemented its pilot Heat Action Plan – the first of its kind in South Asia – and, based on this success, plans to scale out and scale up to other cities across India. Best practices for planning resilience and building public awareness, as well as for the adoption of similar measures in other urban contexts are highlighted during this webinar.

Ms. Bedoshruti Sadhukhan from ICLEI South Asia  gives a brief introduction to the topic of heat-related health risks in India and sets the foundations for the discussion to follow.

Ms. Anjali Jaiswal from the NRDC provides an overview of the project and highlights the importance of having a robust scientific foundation and broad coalition of partners for enhancing the projects' outreach capacity. She also shares initial outcomes of the plan's evaluation and discusses initial attempts in scaling out and scaling up the project to other cities across India.

Dr. Tejas Shah from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation describes the planning process and strategies/measures for preparing local communities for extreme heat. He presents the importance of inter-agency cooperation and communication, focusing on the role of the Health Department in coordinating the city's public health efforts and sharing the Municipality's perspective on how to improve the plan.

Participatory adaptation planning: Examples from African cities

23 January 2015, 15:30 – 16:30 Central Europe Time (GMT+1)

This webinar introduces two CDKN-funded projects: “Building coastal resilience” implemented in Ghana and “Public Private People Partnerships for Climate Compatible Development (4PCCD)” implemented in Mozambique. These two projects offer concrete examples of how to establish successful participatory planning processes and build partnerships among government, academia, the private sector and local communities. The webinar shares lessons learned from the planning experience of the two projects and suggests how these lessons can be extrapolated and what they can offer to development planners and practitioners elsewhere.
